Messy is a casual, counter-service skewer shop on Sullivan Street, on one of the quieter, tree-lined blocks of SoHo near Houston Street. It comes from the team behind The Lighthouse, and it borrows from both Mediterranean and Japanese cooking: proteins and vegetables grilled on sticks over high heat, then served on their own, tucked into pita or laid out as a full plate. The restaurant describes its approach as minimal and ingredient-first, with bold, balanced flavors and quick service. It is a small, friendly space that feels like a neighborhood find, the sort of place you pass once, remember, and come back to for an easy weekday lunch.

Skewers are the heart of the menu: chicken, pork, steak and mushroom, each available à la carte, in a pita sandwich or on a platter with sides. Early regulars single out the mushroom pita and the chicken sandwich, and reviewers on map listings praise the juicy steak skewers. Prices are gentle by SoHo standards, which makes it a good stop between galleries and shops. Messy was featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2025, who wandered in to try a random spot. Takeout and catering are available, and the restaurant's own site handles online orders. Grab a few mixed skewers and eat them on a bench in nearby Vesuvio Playground or along Sullivan Street.

Editor’s tip

Order a mix of skewers as a platter to share, and add the mushroom pita, the dish early regulars rave about.

From Messy

It's very hard to pick favorites on the menu! The chicken sandwich is our #1 seller. I love the steak skewer, and the bowl is a great way to try the rice, addictive cabbage and whichever skewer you crave. If you're getting the beef & lamb kebab, add the spicy feta or smoked labne!
