IllustrationLouie & Ernie's started in East Harlem in 1947 and moved in 1959 to the ground floor of a house on Crosby Avenue, where it has been ever since. It still looks like a home that happens to have a pizzeria downstairs: a handful of tables inside, a patio and backyard out back, and customers who have been coming since they were children. The family's sign-off on the official site is from Cosimo.
The pies are thin and crackly, charred right to the edge, with a bright, slightly sweet sauce that turns them a deep orange. The sausage pie is the order, and you should get a whole one rather than slices. On a warm day take it out to the patio and backyard, then walk next door for dessert. If you can't get back soon, the family sells its pies frozen through the official site.
Editor’s tip
Order a whole sausage pie and take it to the patio.
