PELHAM BAY, BRONX

The Eleanor's Restaurant & Bar

A glitzy Ghanaian room by the last stop of the 6 — jollof, kelewele and goat skewers, with sorrel, palm wine and a weekend DJ.

Eleanor Kwansa grew up in Ghana and, after moving to the Bronx, cooked for her church and her neighbors long before she had a dining room. She opened this one in March 2024, right by the last stop of the 6, and it is nothing like the fast-food row outside: green velvet chairs, a full bar, and a DJ on weekends, when it stays open late. Eleanor and her daughter Priscilla work the room, and they make a first visit easy.

Start with kelewele, the spiced fried plantain, plus fried shrimp or goat skewers, then move on to the generous mains — her jollof rice is the signature. Drink sorrel with a hard kick of ginger, palm wine, or a Blue Lagoon in a rainbow-rimmed glass. A bowl of water arrives for washing your hands, because eating with them is the point; cutlery comes if you ask. The menu also carries a few Jamaican and American dishes.

Editor’s tip

Let Priscilla steer your order, start with kelewele, and try the sorrel.
