Tremont Diner has been feeding this corner of the East Bronx eggs since 1935, and on Sunday mornings there is a line — families from church, couples with toddlers, regulars who know the staff by name. It moves quickly. Many of the staff have worked here for years, and the room has the easy back-and-forth of a place where most customers are regulars.

Order the classics. Two eggs any style come with a generous pile of bacon; a cup of chicken soup sits on nearly every table; the tuna melt arrives open-faced under a mountain of French fries. This is not a destination for anything new — it is a working neighborhood diner of the kind New York keeps losing, and a good breakfast before a long walk in Pelham Bay Park. It sits on East Tremont Avenue between Westchester Square and the Middletown Road station, an easy stop on the way out to City Island.

Editor’s tip

Come early on Sunday, order two eggs with bacon and a cup of chicken soup.
