MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN

Uncle Gussy's

A Park Avenue family truck since 1971 — lamb gyros, souvlaki and their mother's weekly Greek specials.

The family has been selling food on this corner since 1971, when an uncle started with hot dogs and pretzels outside the Park Avenue towers. The nephews turned it into a Greek truck, and their mother, Katerina, still cooks the weekly specials. At lunch the line of office workers is the neighborhood's most reliable endorsement.

Order the lamb gyro or a pork souvlaki platter with the seasoned fries, and look at the specials board for keftedes, spanakopita or kokkinisto. The tzatziki is thick and plentiful, which is the house philosophy. Eat on the plaza at 345 Park or carry it two blocks to the benches by St. Bartholomew's.

Editor’s tip

Go at 11:30 a.m. or after 1:30 p.m., and ask what Katerina's special is before you decide.
