Wolfgang's Steakhouse on Park Avenue is the original of the steakhouse Wolfgang Zwiener opened in 2004 after decades as a head waiter at Peter Luger, and it brings that Brooklyn tradition into a room of real grandeur. The restaurant fills the ground floor of the former Vanderbilt Hotel at Park Avenue and 33rd Street, in a space that was once the hotel's Della Robbia Bar, and its barrel-vaulted ceilings are lined with Guastavino tile made with Rookwood ceramics. Untapped Cities calls the room the lone survivor of the hotel's original 1913 interiors. Add white tablecloths, a seasoned front-of-house team and the hum of a full dining room, and it is classic New York steakhouse theater at its finest.

Featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2025, Wolfgang's is a place to order the classics. The porterhouse is the centerpiece, served for two, three or four, alongside filet mignon, rib eye and sirloin. Start with a shrimp or crabmeat cocktail, or a beefsteak tomato and mozzarella salad, and share sides in the old Luger style: creamed spinach, German potatoes crisped with fried onions, onion rings or broccoli. The wine list is large, so ask your server for guidance if you want something by the glass. Lunch is a smart way to experience the tiled room with less of a commitment, and reservations are wise for dinner, especially on weekends and in the run-up to the holidays.

Editor’s tip

Look up as you sit down: ask for a table in the main vaulted room, where the Guastavino tilework is most impressive.
