The Fifth Avenue Hotel occupies a restored 1907 landmark at Fifth Avenue and 28th Street in NoMad, a building by the architects of the original Penn Station that has been a home, a gallery and a bank in its time. Martin Brudnizki designed the interiors, and the MICHELIN Guide, which awards Two Keys, notes how the hotel fills the old structure with color and artwork. The two-bedroom penthouse, with its wraparound terrace, counts among the guide's top splurges anywhere in the city.

Café Carmellini, the signature restaurant under Andrew Carmellini's culinary direction, holds a MICHELIN selection, which makes the hotel rare among the city's Key properties, and the Portrait Bar has become a local favorite for an evening drink. It suits couples and design lovers who want Gilded Age bones without the stiffness, within walking distance of Madison Square Park and the Flatiron Building. Reserve dinner when you book the room, since Café Carmellini is a destination in its own right.

Editor’s tip

Book Café Carmellini when you book your room, and save a nightcap for the Portrait Bar.
