HELL'S KITCHEN, MANHATTAN
Mari
A Korean hand-roll tasting counter with a Michelin star, on Ninth Avenue.
See current Google rating & reviews ↗Mari means roll in Korean, and Sungchul Shim's second Hell's Kitchen restaurant, a few blocks from Kochi, turns the casual hand-roll counter into a tasting menu with a Michelin star. Counter seats surround the kitchen on all sides, so the cooks work in full view.
Roll follows roll: glossy Scottish salmon, cured mackerel, a trio of mushrooms, each on rice in crisp seaweed and seasoned with Korean flavors. A tray of banchan and seafood closes the meal. It is one of the shortest and most playful ways into the city's starred tier.
Editor’s tip
Eat each roll the moment it lands, while the seaweed still crackles.
