Markette

Caribbean flavor, European polish: a Saga alum's Chelsea dining room with a hidden cocktail lounge below.

A few blocks from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, on a stretch of Seventh Avenue better known for commuters than candlelight, Markette is a polished surprise. Executive chef India Doris, London-born and of Jamaican descent, came up through The NoMad, Crown Shy and Saga before opening this place with partner Alex Pfaffenbach in June 2025; it was briefly called Haymarket before the rename. The cooking pairs European technique with Caribbean flavor. The single dining room is dressed with English-countryside murals, burnt-orange banquettes, chandeliers and a big illuminated mirror over a concrete bar, and downstairs The Argyle is an intimate cocktail lounge for a drink before or after.

Markette was featured by the YouTuber New York Turk in 2026. Start with the salt cod fritters with habanero aioli, which both Time Out and the Michelin Guide singled out, then move to the braised oxtail with cheddar polenta, a dish that sums up the kitchen's point of view. Grilled prawns in a Sungold tomato bouillabaisse with chili crisp and the peri peri chicken with buttermilk ranch have also drawn praise, and mango pudding with coconut and lime is a light finish. It is a dinner restaurant with a cocktail list to match, well suited to a date or a birthday before a Garden show. Reservations are taken through OpenTable.

Editor’s tip

Book an early table before a Madison Square Garden event, then head downstairs to The Argyle for a nightcap.
