IllustrationOpened in the summer of 2025 on Avenue Z, a few blocks from the Sheepshead Bay station, Dmitriev's Bistro is a small family-run café built around one thing Russian kitchens do best: dumplings made by hand. It is a small, quiet room with soft background music and an espresso machine, the kind of neighborhood place where people drop in for breakfast, a business lunch or a box of pastries to take home.
Order pelmeni and vareniki — the kitchen makes its own soft dough from family recipes — with a spoon of sour cream on the side. At midday there is a set business lunch of soup, a hot appetizer, salad and a drink, a good way to taste the whole kitchen. Leave room for the bakery case: samsa, cakes and the nostalgic Eastern European desserts the place makes in-house.
Editor’s tip
Come at lunch for the set business lunch, then take a box of dumplings home.
